Review of Way Out West (1937) by Lyzette G — 03 Feb 2011
Prior to my first watching this film, I had seen a numerous amount of Laurel & Hardy's short films (silents and talkies), and assumed that I was in for some more of their famously outrageous antics. I was definitely not disappointed; in fact, the movie offers so much more!
The primary element that makes this film so unique, compared to their classic slapstick humor, is that many of their routines challenge the limits of reality. There are many parts of this movie that seem just so ridiculous, even for Laurel & Hardy film (most notably, the running gag where Stan uses his thumb as a lighter), but in the end it all works out perfectly.
The movie seems to be tied together by one iconic scene after another. The chase from inside of the villain's apartment articulates the perfect blending of humor and suspense, and is just so great. And I wouldn't dare to avoid mentioning the Oscar-nominated soundtrack, which goes hand-in-hand with some of the boys' most famous song and dance sequences. With all this kept in mind, Way Out West is a must-see for any fan of the comedic duo, or even for someone who's just looking for a good laugh. Believe me, with this movie, your wish shall be granted!
