Review of Water (2014) by Sid H — 26 Apr 2008
My Indian friends who work with widows today say things have changed, but not everything has changed. Finally got to see this on DVD in the city that it was banned in, right before I left India. They stopped filming in India.
It is obvious to me that they had to film in Sri Lanka or South India and not in North India where the Ganges River is. A movie story, highlighting the plight of women, especially widows during the time on Gandhi.
Though I'm not 100% sure of the accuracy of the film, my friends who work with widows in India are. Though widows these days may not be treated as badly, they can still be seen as cursed in some Indian communities.
On first viewing I could tell that Hindi is not Lisa Ray's first language, and by the Western-friendly dialogue I could tell that the script was translated from English, however my Hindi-speaking friends did not notice any of these things.
This film was banned for putting India in a bad light. Would still recommend the movie to everyone. Seema Biswas does a wonderful job. Deepa Mehta's next film was "Fire" which depicts lebianism in India.
