This is the tragic story of how the negative stigma against widows in India affects the lives of these poor women. It's a powerful movie with some very touching moments, especially in the relationship between the eight-year-old girl and the young prostitute who befriend each other at the widow house.

But society does not want these girls to have a happy ending, and the events of this movie are heartbreaking, though not without hope, as we can already see that Gandhi's ideas of peace and tolerance are gaining acceptance.

Overall, this is a beautiful drama, with some stunning cinematography and fitting music that enhanced it even more. However, even at less than two hours, it felt a lot longer, which is rarely a good sign.

It could have been just as strong of a movie, and more consistently engaging, if it were shorter.
