Review of Watchmen (2009) by Tanner K — 29 Mar 2013
This movie was perfect and I mean perfect. An adaptation of DC Comics best selling graphic novels which wasn't supposed to be adapted into a film but was adapted anyway by visual genius Zack Snyder who directed the Dawn of the Dead remake and adapted 300.
The story takes place in an alternate reality where superheroes take care of the crime. In 1985 where the silver age superheroes have retired, someone has found out their identities and is trying to eliminate the team called Watchmen including The Comedian/Edward Blake the oldest out of the team and the first to be eliminated and killed, Rorschach/Walter Kovacs the judge, jury and executioner who is the investigator of their team trying to investigate Blake's murder, Nite Owl/Daniel Dreiberg who is a more soft character and owns the Owl Ship, Silk Spectre II/Laurie Jupiter the daughter of the first Silk Spectre/Sally Jupiter who is one of the first superheroes along with Blake, Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt known as the smartest man in the world and Dr.
Manhattan/Jon Osterman who fell into a nuclear accident and was given superpowers involving changing matter. During Blake's funeral, the Watchmen members all have their memories of when they used to be with The Comedian except for Rorschach who is not investigating at that time and is not wearing his costume and instead is holding a sign outside the cemetery.
While Rorschach is still investigating, he is framed for a fake murder and his real identity is found by the locals. Dr.Manhattan exiles to Mars as too many people keep asking him about his tragic past of his girlfriend Janey Slater and how she got cancer and how Jon was unable to get rid of it.
Dan and Laurie go on missions including saving Rorschach from prison and soon fall in love with each other which concerns Rorschach as to why Dan is getting softer with his character. As Walter and Dan go to Antartica to Adrian's palace, they discover the truth that he was behind was the elimination and he murdered The Comedian, planned to frame Rorschach and made Dr.
Manhattan exile to Mars. Ozymandias says that he has set up a plan to destroy the world using a nuclear apocalypse locating every capital city and put the blame on Jon so that the world will think it was him.
He blocks Jon's future as well so that he is unaware of what is going to happen next so he and Laurie both teleport to Antartica at Adrian's palace and try to fight him but instead decide to keep it a secret but Walter walks away and wants to tell everyone that it wasn't Jon and it was Adrian who set up the nuclear apocalypse but Jon stops him telling him that if he does that, he could end the world as the world is already at war.
Walter forces Jon to destroy him and he exiles into another galaxy leaving Dan mad to fight Adrian wanting to bring back his friends but Adrian says that he can't do anything about it so Laurie and Dan both leave him atone and get on with their normal lives.
Laurie tells her mum that she knows that The Comedian was actually her father. The movie ends in a cafe where Rorschach's journal lies on a side and the movie ends. This was perfect in every way. Dark, gritty and visually striking atmosphere, complex storylines in which you have to watch multiple times in order to understand it.
But if you don't understand it at all, I highly recommend you reading the graphic novel first then watching the movie. It blends the historical and scientific elements in a modern generation way which is too clever for the future.
The special effects were amazing and the performances were top notch especially from Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson and Billy Crudup as they were all perfect in their roles and so were the other actors too.
I think my favourite part was watching Malin Akerman and Patrick Wilson having sex in the Owl Ship as I just couldn't resist watching that scene and the final thing I'd like to say is this movie portrayed pretty much everything from the graphic novels.
It felt so real as it's like the graphic novel had came to life. Watchmen gets a truely pure 10/10.
