Review of Watchmen (2001) by Tom V — 13 May 2014
Social liberals will not like this film, for the same reasons the Dark Knight movies rankle them on some subconscious level, but they will not understand why. For others who love big government and socio-political engineering a bit less, there is something philosophically rewarding in the depiction of heroism as a rather dirty and vulnerable human condition.
True, the film runs a bit long, and stretches thin in a few places, including almost every scene featuring Ozymandias, yet it closes with resolve and dignity for patient and attentive viewers and a few of the key characters are wonderfully cast.
Snyder over-stylizes a bit throughout but the subject matter is a good fit for his signature action sequences and melodramatic dialog framing.
