Review of Wasabi (2001) by Bancho — 14 Mar 2008
Jean Reno is the kick-ass guardian of a young girl. Where have I seen this one before... however, while Wasabi does have that trademark Besson flair, the similarities between this film and the Besson classic Leon the Professional end there.
Jean Reno clearly proves why he is popular in Japan-- his style of humor is decidedly Asian. Ryoko Hirosue does an amazing job and has turned me on to the sexiness of French-speaking Harajuku girls.
The action is sparse, yet over-the-top and sets the tone for the film. Punches to the face send gangsters airborne. Gunshots propel villains in mid-air. The plot is average, but the dialogue is downright poetic at times (as far as I can tell, from the subtitles...).
The only thing missing from Wasabi was a nice, long, well choreographed action sequence, which would have benefited the film greatly. Still-- in all, it's an entertaining, light-hearted watch and a definite must see for fans of Jean Reno, Dance Dance Revolution, or both. (Trust me.).
