Review of Wasabi (2001) by Greg N — 09 Jun 2007
As a fan of both Reno and Besson I struggled through this film to see if it got any better... it did. However it started off so bad, it could only stay there or get better. Most of the reviews seem to draw similarities with other movies and state in which genre this movie belongs to.
How about "didn't have enough budget to do it right genre"? The daughter is annoying, Reno's character is at best 2-dimensional, the verbage is sub-par... the dubbed version is beyond horrible.
If this was the first movie of a director with no talent acting etc (like El Mariachi) it would be a film that would show promise. What do you rate a film from the modern master of french cinema? Besson's real talent is writing (which isn't evident here), and his directing is hit and miss.
. and it missed. Yes I laughed, yes his french companion is funny, but you also laugh at how bad parts are... unless you are a true fan, don't waste your time.
