Review of Warm Bodies (2013) by Facebook U — 19 Nov 2017
I was worried I wouldn't enjoy Warm Bodies. You know, because it's the zombie edition of Twilight. And it doesn't help that they cast Teresa Palmer, Kristen Stewart's twin sister who grew up in Australia.
I'm happy to say that's not the case and I really liked the movie. It is slightly disturbing because a mild element of necrophilia is added since the protagonist is technically dead. Not gone for good so it lessens the impact but it can be discomforting.
Like the demigod romance in a Rick Riordan book, it's best not to think too much of it. I find the chemistry between Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer to be cute and heartwarming. It offers a change of pace by showing zombies as misunderstood beings, who can barely talk but have well-functioning thoughts.
I actually enjoyed listening to R's inner monologue. For anyone who's expecting an action movie in this sweet romantic comedy, there isn't much. One that sets the events of the plot into motion, one brief chase and a climactic action sequence that isn't the big superhero-type action scene with epic gunplay and beautiful explosions.
It's a romantic comedy with a zombie. And it's the movie that says "Twilight, take notes" No, I won't be writing reviews for the Twilight movies anytime soon unless I'm at my limit or I've lost a bet.
The jokes work such as what appears to a slo-mo hero walk but that's just how they move at normal speed. The selection of songs is great and managed to make me feel what I'm supposed to be feeling.
And it's also rather thought-provoking when you come to think of it. Even hopeful for people in an alternate reality where both this movie and zombies exist. How simply one small thing such as love at first sight can make a difference.
A zombie romcom that left my heart falling under the titular adjective.
