Review of Wargames (1962) by J D — 20 Sep 2008
I'd never actually seen "Wargames" until this last weekend, to the shock of many close friends who insisted I see it at ONCE. It actually holds up pretty well in the new millenium and besides being a good flick, it's also a neat time capsule looking at "advanced technology" in the early '80's pre-internet explosion.
It's also peppered with tons of performances by great character actors in their early years, like Maury Chaykin, which makes for countless "Hey, it's that guy!" moments. It's the climactic finale, though, where Matthew Broderick challenges Joshua to the final game that really makes this movie, a chilling scene as the videoscreens display just what a "game" of war really looks like.
