Review of War Witch (2012) by Todd G — 21 Mar 2013
There are unique elements and visuals to this movie, but I felt that I had already seen most of the drama of being a child soldier in other films.
Lots of the turmoil that the title character is suffering is so internalized that the audience has to project it onto the actress, because the script gives few opportunities for Mwanza (a non-professional actor) to exhibit her inner world.
But the shining moments are when the internal world externalizes, such as seeing ghosts on battlefields, or a visit to her boyfriend's family, make this movie sing with a unique point of view and express something greater about the plight of war in Africa.
