The ending was indeed lame, but taken exactly from the book. You got a problem with the ending, take it up with H.G. Wells. In terms of "disaster" movies, this is as good as they get - Spielberg is a master filmmaker.
It has heart, adventure, and terror not seen in normal movies of the same ilk. All in all, a worthy picture.
