Review of Walkabout (1971) by Weston H — 04 Feb 2009
This movie is comprised mainly of shots of the characters walking. there is nothing wrong with this.
This movie deals with complicated themes like the encroaching of capitalism on the aboriginal lifestyle.
There is nothing wrong with this.
There is something wrong, however, with the directors inability to choose weather he wants to make a narrative or non-narrative film. if he just stuck with making the film non-narrative, we would be able to enjoy the beautiful camerawork and have the themes work at a subconcious level. if he decided he was going to stick to a structured narrative, we could revel in the absurdist social commentary in the first and last last ten minutes of the film, or appreciate the social dynamic between the characters.
Instead, It switches between narrative and non-narrative every five to ten minutes, so I have to constantly switch from thinking rationally to thinking metaphoricaly, which distracts from the picture.
That, and almost everything this film has to say, Cannibal Holocaust says in more convincing terms.
