I had never really listened to any Johnny Cash, but I knew a lot about him because my dad was a big fan when he was younger. So I saw this movie with him, and I liked it quite a bit. I think my dad was surprised by the true story of this man's life. The movie doesn't seem to candy coat anything.

The story follows Johnny Cash from a very young age, to his marriage to June Carter. It chronicles his rise to fame, his drug addiction, his unhappy first marriage, him falling in love with June Carter, and him getting his career back on track. The movie was full of musical numbers as well, but it is the behind the scenes look at the singers that make the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny Cash. It is an inspired performance. You can see emotions and thoughts run through his expressions perfectly. Plus he did all his own singing, which seems like a huge challenge, but he did a fantastic job. My favorite actress, Reese Witherspoon, plays June Carter. She deserved the Oscar that she won for this performance. The change between her stage persona, and her real personality is striking, and wonderfully acted. Witherspoon also sings all her own songs, and also does a fantastic job.

Overall, fans of Johnny Cash will love it. And people like me who aren't to familiar with his music will also enjoy it. Great job all around by everyone involved, especially Phoenix and Witherspoon.

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." 8/10.
