A gripping biograph based on Johnny Cash's own words, which is apparent and makes the story feel as real as it might just be. Joaquin Phoenix dress the part superbly, very convincing and just as black as needed, and the resemblance in his singing voice is absolutely remarkable.

The story trips up a bit when focus is set on Cash's wife and the building relationship with June Carter. Even if Reese Witherspoon's performance helps these parts along quite a bit, but the storytelling here just isn't as inspiring as the rest of the film.

Either way you look at it, it's an interesting story and an extremely well-acted film that most will enjoy, be you a Cash fan or not.
