Review of Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price (2005) by Pedro B — 26 Mar 2006
Is Wal-Mart evil? Is Wal-Mart the most evil thing in the entire world? It may very well be!! At least that's how this documentary paints the picture. And hey it does a good job. It makes Wal-Mart seem like one of the most underhanded sleazy cuth throat kinda' orginizations that has ever existed.
But you have to wonder.. are these things Wal-Mart exclusively are guilty of? I bet cases can be made for K-Mart and Target and Best Buy and so forth for these very same things as well. But the movie is sucessful at making Wal-Mart seem like a giant Evil Empire and builds it's case up really well til the end.
The last two segments kinda' kill the build and seem to ruin the strong case they were making. The stuff about security seems more just crime around shopping centers related than Wal-Mart related.
And showing some freaky evangelist people preaching and praying and protesting about Wal-Mart at the end wasn't a good way to end the case. It probably turns more of us normal folks away from what they're trying to say than it brings people in.
Cos it makes it seem like the film is made by crazy people. But up to the last 2 segments they build a really strong case that well make you convinced Wal-Mart is super evil for a little while anyways.
