Review of Waking Life (2001) by Shawn-Ray M — 18 Aug 2009
I had heard this movie is all about existentialism, which is a favorite topic of mine, but it delves into more theories than just that. Like most of Linklater's films (a director I find myself enjoying more and more as I get older) it's very talky and, for a lot of people, could be considered very boring as nothing really happens.
.. people just talk. The one thing about this movie that I found the most distracting was the rotoscoping effect that Linklater seemed to fall in love with here. I get why he did it, but I think the movie would have been easier to follow if the image wasn't jumping all over the screen all the time.
Otherwise, it's a movie that makes you think... and I can't complain with that. I particularly liked Linklater's character's monologue at the end. It was fun to listen to.
