Review of Wake Wood (2011) by Sanjid P — 08 Apr 2011
Great atmospheric ritual horror from Hammer. When a couples daughter is killed they move to a small village to try and get over it. When they move to Wake Wood they carry on with the same jobs they had before, trying to get back to normal, as difficult as it may be. One night when the woman witnesses a strange ritual, the couple learn they can bring their daughter back to life but only for three days and only if shes been dead for over a year.
This reminded me of the old school 70's horrors that relied on atmosphere, like The Wicker Man(minus the songs!). Saying that, there is the odd gory moment, with the ritual being quite bloodthirsty but overall its the look and feel of the village and its residents that makes this much more than some run-of-the-mill horror. Much better than the recent Hammer effort, The Resident, this proves the classic horror company are trying to cover all horror movie bases and are making up for lost time very well so far.
