Review of Wake Wood (2011) by Rob L — 25 Oct 2011
After receiving the DvD, I read the blurb and was surprised I had ever put this on my list - did I have an imaginary flatmate at some point? Still, this horror movie turned out to be appealingly watchable, with some genuinely graphic moments - the performing of a caesarean section on a cow under the dutiful gaze of Timothy Spall - how can anyone not be impressed by that?
Owing a lot to The Wicker Man, the film spells things out too easily and thus takes away the mystique while emphasizing the ludicrousness of its premise. Aidan Gillen from The Wire is good as the main actor and the Irish setting provides novel twists.
