Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by Dodd A — 03 Mar 2011
This isn't some movie with touching scenes and a sad story, it's reality. It's what is happening in our country every single day and it's truly heartbreaking and infuriating. You have to watch this, you have to pass it on, you have to text the number after, you have to do whatever you can to educate people on the troubles of the education in our country. I don't know what my part is yet to somehow help bring a change to this huge disaster, but I'm going to figure it out.
The education system is broken. Shitty teachers are basically allowed to do their job however they want as long as they're not doing anything illegal. They'll keep their jobs, because of tenure. That's not fair. It's not fair for teachers to get special treatment and have their jobs protected if they're not doing a good job. Students in mainly poor areas, sometimes even nice areas, are shoved into schools where they're not being educated, no one's graduating, they're dropping out, etc. and then they're placed in a lottery, meaning their future is based on luck, if they want a chance at a good school.
The teachers unions started as a good idea, and no surprise went bad, and now they have to be either fixed or destroyed. It's time for every student to get a chance at an education and not just the kids with parents who have the money to put them in a private school.. our public schools need to be just as good.
