Review of Waiting for "Superman" (2010) by Albert G — 29 Apr 2011
OK, the public school system in the most powerful economy on Earth is rotten and broken to the core. What was especially heartbreaking was watching the families putting their fate in lotteries for the few slots in the few good schools in their area -- because their area public schools are so crappy.
The system is broken, and the movie points to many factors -- primarily, a bloated bureaucracy on so many levels of government, and the teachers' unions, all contributing to a system that encourages mediocrity in our teachers (the tenure system in primary and secondary education).
I just wish the movie spent a little more time on the good news -- the concrete steps anyone can take to do something about this (more than just pointing to their website).
