Review of Wadjda (2012) by Peter F — 14 Oct 2013
When a film's most impressive attribute is that it exists at all (it's directed by a Saudi woman, and shot in the very home country that has banned cinema as well as the right for women to vote) it can be easy to overrate it's merits, and praise it more it's historical significance rather than material or technical craft.
Fortunately though, Wadjda is a splendid film that recalls great neo-realist films, and it is also one of the few all-ages films that really makes that title apropos. Well thought-out, very plausible, and cautiously optimistic, Wadjda might just be the best film from the Middle East since A Separation.
