Review of Wadjda (2012) by Marian B — 17 Sep 2014
Wadjda is the first narrative feature to ever be shot in Saudi Arabia, a country that has outlawed movie theaters since the 80s, and it's a very good one that is very much worth seeing. It demonstrates firsthand how ridiculously oppressive Saudi culture is to women and how little rights they have, and yet the spunky nature and independent spirit of the title character keeps things from becoming altogether depressing.
The ending even offers the possibility of change on the horizon, and on behalf of the countless thousands of Wadjda's out there, one can only hope this film represents a step in that direction.
