Review of W. (2008) by Jens T — 14 Jul 2009
A few fascinating and well made touches can't overcome the laundry list of problems. Every performance(except Thandie Newton) is really good. While Brolin slips into caricature a few times there are still a handful of scenes where you think you're really watching Bush himself.
Cromwell is a standout, the scenes with him and Brolin are the best of the movie. But the best performance hands down goes to Dreyfuss as Dr. Strangelove aka Dick Cheney, Dreyfuss is creepy good!! The biggest problem with W.
is you can't savor any element of it at all. They shot the movie on a tight budget, had to rush to shoot it and it sadly shows. I can't imagine what another 40 minutes and a few rewrites to the script would've done for this.
