Review of W. (2008) by Jason R — 10 May 2010
Oliver Stone seems to have gotten in over his head on this one. The biggest mistake made with this movie is that it was made during the Presidency of George W. Bush, thereby ultimately casting a bit of a cloud over the accuracy of some of the events depicted.
As such, Stone uses dramatic license to take the audience behind the scenes. Brolin's performance seems to come around well, however, as he brings a certain humanity to Bush, an internal conflict for his father's attention that makes him relatable, and reminds the audience that even a President might not be the apple of his father's eye.
It's easy to forget that a President is human, as media coverage increasingly desensitizes us by putting him on screen 24/7, but Stone does give us that in between jabs at W's policies and personality.
