Review of Vulgar (2002) by Steve J — 05 Dec 2007
You know that cartoon clown in fishnets at the beginning of Clerks? This movie is about him. His name is Flappy, he's played by Brian O'Halloran (aka Dante), and his life sucks. When he decides to become a bachelor party clown instead of just a kid's party clown, he takes on the name Vulgar the Clown. Then he gets brutally raped by these really fucked up guys, gets his own TV show, gets blackmailed, becomes a vigilante, and has other not so wacky adventures.
This movie is put out by View Askew, and you'll see a lot of people you recognize from the Jay and Bob movies--Steve Dave is Flappy's pal, Scott Mosier, Ethan Suplee, and Kevin Smith all show up, and Jason Mewes even stops shooting up long enough to make a cameo. In addition to the actors, there are some other things that kind of set the movie in the View-Askewniverse--Walt Flannegan's dog is mentioned, for example. But overall, it's not really the same world. This world's not very funny. In fact, it's pretty damn dark, creepy, and just plain wrong.
Vulgar is a well-made low budget flick, but I'm not sure it's something I'd recommend watching more than once--it's just a little too fucked up.
