Review of Vulgar (2002) by Andrew D — 15 Jun 2009
The synopsis and awesome poster for this makes it seem like a sure contender for a revenge/exploitation/grindhouse cult classic. The concept is original and intriguing. So how could the director get it so wrong and create such a disastrous film?
He takes the over-the-top subject matter painfully serious, and hardly anything happens. Minus five minutes, the film is just pointless talking. The problem is that the production is so amateurish that it's impossible to take seriously (as if one could from the subject matter). It doesn't help that Brian O'Halloran is an atrocious actor. It all adds up to an unwatchable experience.
What's good? There is a tiny bit of grim pleasure to be had in the scenes with the villainous family. With the little screen time they have, they seem like professionals compared to O'Halloran (Suplee actually is, and the father and other brother are quite good as well). But five minutes of watchable footage does not make the rest of the dreadful film worth sitting through.
What a waste of an awesome concept. The fact that the writer/director messed it up this bad is unforgivable.
