Review of Vision Quest (1985) by Gary G — 16 Jun 2009
(4 stars out of 5) Another 80's coming-of-age yarn, based on a novel, this one focuses on a determined teen who has decided that instead of riding out his senior year as the champion wrestler in his weight class--he'd rather drop three weight classes and take on the baddest wrestler in the state.
The movie is full of homoerotic elements, the wrestling and locker room scenes not-withstanding, there is Kuch his best friend, best known for his role as Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles. Kuch actually coins the phrase Vision Quest for Louden's determination to come out on top and beat the top wrestler despite the odds, and Louden's deteriorating health.
The film's driving theme is universal whether you're old or young, it's also well known for Madonna's big screen debut. She sings Crazy for You and Gambler in the bar scenes.
