Review of Virunga (2014) by Auli H — 02 Jan 2015
What makes this (and the documentary form) so immensely powerful and affecting is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness history unfolding, especially when it happens in a remote and almost unknown part of the world.
This is Guerillas in the Mist updated to encompass mercenary armies, soulless oil companies, heroic national park rangers, adorable adolescent mountain gorillas -- before, during, and briefly after the eruption of a horrifying jungle battle in Eastern Congo.
