Review of Viridiana (1962) by Wut S — 28 Jun 2008
With subtlety and deceptive artlessness, the film condemns incautious goodness as a fuel for moral corruption, denouncing charity as an undue benevolence that lures its recipients into ungratefulness and betrayal.
An analogy of blind faith having no ground in modern society could be drawn on how the homeless consumes over Viridiana. But while the film can be seen as an exposure of the propriety's frailty, the lifelong "ignorance is bliss" Viridiana could have attained at the Convent and her heavily suggested "change" at the end are offered as dosages of reality check to counterbalance the film's pessimistic outlook.
