Review of Viridiana (1962) by Zoran S — 01 Aug 2008
One of Bunuel's best films. A bleak and viciously funny look at the futility of charity (an idea expressed in Bunuel's great joke with the dogs), the film assaults Christian ethics to such a degree that it still has the power to insult today.
At the very least, it's a film you will think about (and chuckle to yourself over) when you meet someone who self-righteously speaks about how much "volunteer" work they do. In Bunuel's universe, much like ours perhaps, charity is just repressed pity.
