Review of Viridiana (1962) by Barney B — 08 Jan 2011
Anne, I don't think Bunuel is necessarily talking about the futility of charity. He seems more focused on charitable need - both the giver and and taker's need. It's not so much Viridiana's desire to do charitable works that causes the problem.
It's why she's doing it, and the need that doing charitable works fulfills in her. Bunuel seems to be saying that, though she's ministering to the poor, she's doing it for the wrong reason and therefore doing it in a way that ultimately blows up in her face.
Thinking about what happens, is it fair to say the poor react to Viridiana with the same contempt that she levels at them?
