Review of Viridiana (1962) by Jesus E — 10 Aug 2010
Viridiana is not one of my favorite Bunuel films--feels like a Marquis de Sade story without the money shots or the brutality. It is a beautifully created film whose religious critique is powerful at times and trite at others: having degenerate homeless people dance and party to the Hallelujah Chorus is just a bit too easy.
Viridiana lacks the engagingly fun surrealistic, absurdist antics of his other films, and it never quite develops as a truly powerful drama. Still, it is fun to watch the film that Franco invited him back to Spain to make, which ended up infuriating the Fascists as well as the Catholics.
A film that is genuinely provocative but that pales in comparison to Bunuel's other films.
