Review of Viridiana (1962) by Gaz U — 13 Apr 2008
It really wasn't anything that I hadn't seen before and is hardly that offensive. Well, to put it another way: those who are looking for ways to slam organized religion will view Bunuel's various tweaks with the same self-satisfied glee as that of the average viewer of any given later season episode of Family Guy.
Viewers looking to be offended at the attempts at blasphemy will be. If you are comfortably in the middle of these two extremes, you will probably come away wondering what the fuss was about (thanks to a blessed ignorance provided by being almost 50 years removed from the film's time), and with the impression of watching a well-made student film (in that it broadcasts a "oooh look at me! I'm being controversial!) rather than a work by the same man who made "Andalusian Dog".
Average at best, pretentious and lifeless, but with no glaring lapses in the technical aspects.
