Review of Videodrome (1983) by Richard H — 09 Aug 2010
Just rewatched. The fun is realizing the war Cronenberg pits his protagonist between: the "new flesh" technological cultists and right-winged conspirators intent on destroying the media by means of itself.
James Woods's hallucinatory journey is visceral and fun (and a precursor to Existenz) while still maintaining potent subtext. It is sort of the anti-Parnassus, where the visuals work to strengthen the metaphor instead of merely offering a landscape for unrelated events within which to transpire.
