Review of Videodrome (1983) by Stephen L — 30 Mar 2012
I don't think I've seen too many movies that analyze so many topics is just an hour and a half. Desensitization, violent media, mind over matter, human perception and manipulation, organic-technological metamorphosis, etc. You almost don't have time to catch your breath. David Cronenberg is a genius and I can see a lot of parallels between this and one of his later films " eXistenZ", mostly in the form or grotesque imagery and the fusion of man and machine but also in the pacing and logic of the universe of the film. He tells his own stories and expects the viewer to be smart enough to follow along which I think makes him all the more groundbreaking. But what's more important is that the audience quickly understand the fictitious world in which the story takes place and we don't have to try to hard to suspend our disbelief, the movie does that for us. I look forward to seeing more work by David Cronenberg because this and eXistenZ really demonstrate the style and brilliance he has while his more recent work in Eastern Promises and A History of Violence showcase his talent. Also, He's Canadian!!! CANADA FTW!!!!!!!
P.S. Thanks Rob, no more snuff films for me for a week.
