Review of Videodrome (1983) by Steve S — 07 Dec 2012
Surrealist horror film masked in sci-fi overtones. While some of the more visually gruesome and explicit scenes can come off as campy the effects are remarkably good. Woods performance as a jaded television executive with a sadomasochism fixation comes across as dense and we never get any background on the pathology of his character .
Debbie Harry comes off as a bit of a talking head but maybe that was the intended effect. In any case while the plot was grossly underdeveloped I felt the themes of violence and technology obsessed culture, although analogue based in the movie, were prescient of our current Youtube and viral video culture.
