Review of Videodrome (1983) by Mark J — 24 Jan 2013
Cronenberg's movie seems to be an expressionistic exploration of how the abuse of visual media distorts the mind of Max Renn and, by extension, all of us. References to communications theory (especially Marshall McLuhan) appear throughout the film.
Regardless of its meaning, Videodrome succeeds on the strength of its extraordinary special effects. The pulsing, quivering VCR tape is always my favorite, though many others are equally effective: astounding, creepy, fascinating, and repellent.
(If you think this movie is weird, give eXistenZ a try.).
