Review of Videodrome (1983) by Ben G — 17 Mar 2012
I'm a pretty big fan of Cronenberg, but I have to say outside Crash Videodrome is my least favorite film I've seen by him. As interesting and original as the movie is at it's best, it simply leaves itself too open-ended for my tastes. I don't mind some ambiguity, but this movie has a kind of wierd randomness to it, expecially in the third act. James Woods is good, but this is certainly not his best role. The whole message about media exploitation has been done better in other films.
Overall I feel about this movie almost exactly as a feel about the movie The Cell: it's original with fascinating and disturbing images at times, and deserves credit for that, and is worth watching for people who can stomach it, but as a complete movie it feels lacking.
