Review of Victoria & Abdul (2017) by Mary D — 12 Oct 2017
Made me cringe -- two jokes with burka punchlines in one movie? All that foot-kissing? But the real problem was the lack of a plot and character development. I couldn't tell if Abdul - who starts out as the slightly dotty but charming hotel keeper from the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - was a liar or a user.
Same problem with Queen Victoria: a lecherous old lady, a lonely woman commanding love, or--as her court thinks--someone who should have abdicated long ago? I thought this movie was slopped together to give Judi Dench a role.
She has one truly stirring speech - "I am not insane" - but it's out of place in this movie.
