Review of Victoria & Abdul (2017) by Richard S — 05 Sep 2018
Victoria and Abdul tells the story of an friendship that formed between Queen Victoria and Abdul Karim who was a young Indian clerk who was requested to travel to the UK to present the Queen with a token coin for her Jubilee.
Their friendship leads the Queen to question the restrictions put upon her and view the world in a new light while at the same time her inner circle do all they can to destroy the friendship. The story is supposedly based upon fact, however, how close to the truth it is will be some what debatable as all evidence of their friendship was destroyed by the Queen's son after her death.
It was only in 2010 after the discovery of Abdul's own journals that evidence of their friendship came to light. The film overall was pretty enjoyable and surprisingly amusing. It's also a nice touch having Judy Dench play the Queen again at an older age as she did in Mrs Brown.
