Review of Victor/Victoria (1982) by David G — 20 Apr 2012
Comedy musical set in 1934 which sees impoverished Parisienne singer Julie Andrews find a new lease of life as an early form of drag queen in a well-to-do cabaret, falling for visiting Chicago nightclub entrepreneur James Garner along the way, which proves somewhat awkward considering her success depends on everyone believing she's really a man.
This is a fun, feelgood movie with strong performances (Robert Preston steals the show as Andrews' gay best friend/business partner Toddy), entertaining musical numbers, witty dialogue and comedy that's very Blake Edwards - equal parts subtle and over the top.
Keep an eye out for an accident-prone private eye character who's Inspector Clouseau in all but name! It may be an old-fashioned film but it hasn't lost it's charm and while it is a little drawn out at over two hours long, look on the bright side, that just gives you more time to ponder exactly how anyone could possibly mistake Julie Andrews for a man! I mean the hips alone give her away!
