Review of Victor/Victoria (1982) by Nate W — 25 Jun 2011
Julie Andrews does a cross-dressing double negative as a woman impersonating a male drag queen who makes it big on the cabaret scene in 1934 Paris. Her performance is one of her career's best, balancing the drama, comedy, romance, and music with flair and conviction.
Other memorable turns come courtesy of droll Robert Preston and outrageously funny Lesley Ann Warren. Blake Edwards' direction is at times spotty, as in the periodic inclusions of slapstick, but on the page it's one of his punchiest and wittiest screenplays.
Henry Mancini provides the melodic spark by way of a handful of tunes including the lovely "Crazy World" and especially the snazzy "Le Jazz Hot".
