Review of Victor Frankenstein (2015) by Peter C — 02 Jan 2018
I went into this film with no expectations, as most re-tellings of this classic story failed to capture my interest. While not nearly as deep or dark as previous films based on Mary Shelley's most popular story, Victor Frankenstein has a notable difference - McAvoy clearly understood the character he was playing.
Most adaptations try to balance a well-intentioned Frankenstein with the "Monster Inside", but usually fall into the trap of making him too difficult to identify with. I actually was torn between thinking Victor a fool or a genius.
Never before had I seen him as so human. Daniel Radcliffe plays his character well enough, and I was able to sympathize with his motivations, though some of his actions confused me. Victor Frankenstein focuses on the relationship between the people, and maybe that's why it wasn't generally well received.
There are far more qualified people to speak to the technicalities/filmmaking, so I will leave that to them. If you're not looking for a film to adhere rigidly to the original story, and want to see characterization done well, check this one out.
