Review of Vexille (2007) by Sarah G — 15 Feb 2008
This was a visually interesting film, as much of anime is, but it didn't exactly pull me in. I appreciated the design aspect, especially the advanced technology, which was animated with the kind of lush detail that used to be reserved for millefiori tapestries, and the way the smooth planes of the characters' faces and bodies stood out in contrast to that detailed backdrop -- the light glaze made them appear almost monochromatic in contrast to the drama of the technology and the colors of the settings -- it was very console RPG, in a good way.
Even so, there were a few times during the film that I couldn't stop myself from snorting with derision. The sheer quantity of moments when the main character falls to her knees (literally and metaphorically) and screams out someone's name was enough to make me roll my eyes.
Interesting to see, but not one I'll be spending any additional time with.
