Review of Vertigo (1958) by Perry A — 12 Feb 2014
It is very rare for a film to live up to all your expectations. Alfred's film Vertigo is an example of a film that thrilled me when I first saw it and has only grown on me. Everything, from the opening spirals to the twist ending had me enthralled.
It is a stunning movie. The beautiful vibrant colors on the car and the downtown shots of San Francisco take your breath away. I was stunned with Judy's character transforming into Madeline with the glow of the hotel's neon light making her appear like a ghost.
The unexpected death at the end makes you feel extremely uncomfortable and catches you off guard. Why did they not install a safety railing?? The beautiful score by Bernard Herrman is amazing. The special effects are stupendous for the time.
This film could easily describe one of humanity's modern day problems: A man trying to create the perfect woman. This thriller deserves to be number nine on the AFI's list of 100 greatest films!
