Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Tiffany Y — 13 Mar 2008
This movie does not take too much of a stance against or for abortion. It just shows how a working class woman wants to help ("help"?) young women who either willfully or forcibly had sex and as a result got pregnant with a baby that they often do not have social or economic support to keep.
Vera received no money to perform the abortions, although a childhood "friend" who scheduled the abortions did get money. This movie was entertaining throughout, never boring. I am surprised, though, that the movie did not include more footage of friends, family, neighbors, and others condemning Vera.
