Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Trevor H — 13 Jun 2009
Imelda Staunton was deservedly beaten by Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) for Best Actress, but in a wider, non-Hollywood (read non-abortion obsessed) world of Oscars, you have to wonder what might have been.
Anyway, a towering performance from Staunton, in a movie that constantly has you fighting with your social conscience - was she right or wrong to do what she did, not-for-profit. Staunton was wonderfully supported by a strong cast, Alex Kelly and Daniel Mays particularly standing out.
That feeling of a court case taking place with you, centre stage, as a bystander, really resonated with me. Heartbreaking, provoking, cinema at its best.
