Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Da Pain E — 10 Apr 2005
As other's have pointed out the acting in this movie is quite superb. The story line is dark and depressing. In some ways the plot is predictable, which for some may detract from the entertainment value.
The story is quite important. I was dissappointed that no historical context was given, we are told at the end that the story is entirely fictional. We aren't told about when England's laws changed and how many women were effected adversely by those laws.
The director did an excellent job of portraying the cramped small quarters this family lived in. Also the day to day life of a quiet maid servant was portrayed in stark contrast to her secret other life.
Alas, many "English" speakers may have some trouble with the accents, it takes a few minutes for your ear to adjust and some of the humorous comments are hard to get.
