Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Gustavo H — 10 Jun 2010
A bit slow to start, but absorbing by the end.
What struck me most was that it was possible to procure an abortion legally - but you had to pay something in the region of £100. Considering the Drakes baulk at paying £36 for a TV it goes to show just how inaccessible a legal abortion would have been for women without money. But if she can't afford a baby and can't afford an abortion, where does she go from there? Is Vera wrong to do what she does? The film raises a lot of questions, but leaves the viewer to answer them for themselves.
