Review of Vengeance Is Mine (1979) by Chris G — 25 Oct 2007
A different sort of serial killer film, Shohei Imamura's "Vengeance is Mine" tells the true story of infamous Japanese killer Iwao Enokizu. A pure sociopath, he travels across Japan conning people out of money and killing for the same reason, though never showing a second thought to it.
Film really builds the character through its almost soap-opera like situations, possibly suggesting that the main character is a product of Japanese culture at the time. Hard to watch but ultimately fascinating.
My second film of Imamura's (after "The Pornographers," one of the oddest films I've ever seen) makes me want to track down more of his work. Next: "Black Rain" I think.
